Most interior paints cover 350–400 square feet per gallon. Measure your wall area (length × height for each wall), subtract doors and windows (about 20 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window), then divide by the coverage rate. Always add 10% extra and plan for two coats on most projects.
| Finish | Coverage per Gallon | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Flat / Matte | ~400 sq ft | Ceilings, low-traffic rooms |
| Eggshell | ~350 sq ft | Living rooms, bedrooms |
| Satin | ~350 sq ft | Hallways, kids' rooms |
| Semi-Gloss | ~300 sq ft | Kitchens, bathrooms, trim |
| Gloss | ~275 sq ft | Trim, cabinets, doors |
Most projects need 2 coats. You may need 3 coats when painting a dark color over a light one, covering stains, or using lighter colors over darker walls.
